Lotus Nei Gong DVD’s with Damo Mitchell

Coming in early 2017 are this series of DVD’s by Damo Mitchell and his senior students. Each DVD covers one of the foundation sets of exercises taught within the school. We created these DVD’s as a way to provide visual instruction on the official, standardised format of the exercises taught by all teachers within our organisation. Each movement is discussed in great detail with the aim being that the DVD’s can serve as a form of visual support for both students and teachers of our system.

Please note though that these DVD’s primarily cover the physical mechanics and choreography of the exercises with an emphasis upon application of principles into the moving and standing practices. Not covered on the DVD’s are energetic details or instruction on work with Qi or Shen as this kind of teaching can only be transmitted during face-to-face classes. No video, online training or other medium can effectively teach internal mechanics of exercises. These discs contain video instruction on the physical mechanics of Lotus Nei Gong’s exercises according to the foundation stage of their syllabus.

Ji Ben Qi Gong – DVD

This DVD contains instruction on the fundamentals of Qi Gong practice as well as the Ji Ben Qi Gong exercises. The information and exercises contained within this DVD are fundamental to all of the further practices within Lotus Nei Gong, so much so that even advanced students come back to them time and time again.

The Ji Ben Qi Gong teach you how to stand and move properly as well as showing us how each of the key energetic movements are set up within the body through our movements. Within the Lotus Nei Gong school we teach all of our students the Ji Ben Qi Gong exercises in order to build a solid foundation.

Damo Mitchell will start by helping you obtain a good neutral standing posture which is paramount to all of the practices within this Qi Gong set as well as other the other Qi Gong sets taught within Lotus Nei Gong. After this he will walk you through each of the eight Ji Ben Qi Gong movements, starting with structure and good movement and then layer in details to help you go deeper into the practice. Throughout the DVD he also breaks down the reasoning behind many of the principles taught within almost all schools of Qi Gong practice. Principles such as ‘bending the knees’, ‘sinking the weight’ and ’emptying the chest’ all have specific reasonings behind them. If we can understand the reasons then we can apply these principles to our training to generate more efficient result.

Wu Xing Qi Gong – DVD

The contents of this DVD cover the fundamental exercises called the Wu Xing Qi Gong. Wu Xing refers to the five elements, though outside of Chinese Medicine practice it is better to think of them as five movements.

These exercises are simple movements that are designed to help you contact with the five elemental pulses within the body. Each pulse corresponds to one of the elements which is linked to one of the five key organs of the body, the Kidneys, the Liver, the Heart, the Spleen and the Lungs. As such each pulse dictates the base health of each corresponding organ. As you continue to practice these exercises you will become aware of the pulse and then as you go deeper into your practices these exercises will help you to nourish these organs. Other than the medical benefits of these exercises it is important to know that these pulses also dictate the quality of the Qi which flows throughout the rest of the energy body.

Damo Mitchell once again covers the fundamentals of correctly standing which is paramount to getting the most from all of the Qi Gong Sets taught within Lotus Nei Gong. After this he then moves on to teach you the simple, but effective, movements that correspond to each of the five elements. Once you have learnt the movements he then delves into each of the exercises providing additional guidance on how to perform the exercises most effectively for your development. Alongside the exercises Damo discusses some of the basic theories attached to the Wu Xing Qi Gong set of exercises to deepen your understanding.

Wu Dao Yin – DVD

This DVD contains instructions relating to the Wu Dao Yin set of exercises. Dao Yin exercises are similar to Qi Gong exercises (like the Ji Ben Qi Gong or Wu Xing Qi Gong) except that they are more Yang than their counterpart. As such some of the exercises contained within this DVD aren’t soft and come with a more extended feeling than their sister exercises.

These exercises are moving forms of energetic purging. Each exercise is designed to target and open up key energetic centres within the body. As these centres are pulled open they generate enough space within the energy body to help clear stagnant Qi. The movements are then combined with focused awareness and specific breathing methods in order to lead the body towards a state of better health. The exercises are also used within Nei Gong to help clear emotional traumas which have often become trapped within the Jing Jin and meridians of the body.

Damo Mitchell will take you through each of the five exercises in detail, starting with the shapes of the movements and then layering information on top of this so that you can overtime increase your understanding and efficiency of these exercises. Along with information about the exercises themselves Damo will explain the differences between Dao Yin and Qi Gong sets; provide insight into how to increase the efficiency of the practices through the use of Yi (focused awareness) and Breath.

Dragon Dao Yin – DVD

This DVD contains instructions relating to the Dragon Dao Yin set of exercises. Similar in nature to the Wu Dao Yin exercises the Dragon Dao Yins add a greater element of movement to your practice as they are sets of short forms that move up and down in a line. Even though these exercises are Level 1 material it is important to note that they are not ideally suited for the absolute beginner.

This set of exercises specifically targets the spine and it’s associated channels. Through various stretching, twisting and undulating movements, the spinal column is squeezed and stretched in such a manner that it helps to purge pathogens from its length. This helps to generate space within the soft tissues of the body as well as opening up the core congenital networks which run through the torso. The more space that is created, the higher the level of internal energy which the body may conduct along its length. As an added benefit, many students have noticed the strong healing effects of the Dragon Dao Yin exercises upon the spine and other joints of the body.

Damo Mitchell will take you through each of the four Dragon Dao Yin exercises breaking down these more intricate movements into smaller pieces. It is important that you can understand each element of the short forms in isolation so as to better understand and perform the whole form, as such emphasis is placed on this. He will also provide you with footage and instructions on piecing the forms together so that over time they may flow. Seperate to the exercises there will be some short discussions on topics such as ‘Working with the Spine’ and ‘The use of Yi and Breath’ to help you understand the concepts that underlie these practices.

Lotus Moon Qi Gong – DVD

This DVD covers the fundamental exercises that are attributed to the category of exercises known as Lotus Moon Qi Gong. Although this is not a particular set of exercises like the Wu Xing Qi Gong the exercises contained on this DVD are those that should underpin any female Nei Gong practitioners practice.

Most exercises within the school are suitable for both male and female practitioners it is only at later stages that women branch off and have their own set of practices. This is because there are some subtle differences in the energetic makeup between men and women. The exercises discussed within this DVD help women to take advantage of their gender-specific strengths.

Roni Edlund will take you through these exercises which largely revolve around the unification to the energy of the moon, balancing the energy of the Uterus and understanding the reverse-cycle for women. She will also take you through some practices from the Buddhist tradition that invigorate the energy of the Heart. She will guide you through the exercises step by step focusing on getting the movements correct at first and then they will layer details into each exercise for you to slowly understand and maximise the effectiveness of them. The DVD will also contain some discussion on the nature of difference between the energy systems of men and women; women’s relationship to the moon; and alignment of the period to the phase of the moon.

Hunyuan Qi Gong – DVD

This DVD will take you through the core exercises that form part of the Hunyuan Qi Gong set. Unlike the other sets of Qi Gong exercises this set has an incredibly large number of exercises, therefore this DVD will take you through the core exercises rather than attempt to teach you movements for 30+ exercises.

The focus of the Hunyuan Qi Gong is different from the other Qi Gong sets as these exercises lead you deeper into your energetic system by working at developing a much higher state of release within the body. These skills are paramount if a you wish to move beyond the surface levels of practice and connect to the deeper congenital pathways of the meridian system. Later practices such as Nei Dan heavily rely on the congenital essences which flow through these deeper congenital pathways, hence why these are an important aspect of deeper levels of training.

Damo Mitchell will take you through each of the core Hunyuan Qi Gong exercises one at a time helping you to familiarise yourself with the movements. Unlike the other Qi Gong or Dao Yin sets taught within the school the Hunyuan Qi Gong set is much more relaxed externally and as such the structure, although still important, is not as relevant. Once you become familiar with the movements Damo then goes on to explain how each of the exercises work, with a high degree of focus on controlled use of the Yi (intent). Alongside the Qi Gong exercises there will also be a few discussions to help you better understand the Hunyuan Qi Gong set as a whole.
