Bagua Summer Camp

11th – 23rd July 2018

  • Two week long residential summer camp in Sweden
  • Taught by Damo Mitchell and senior students
  • Classical training in retreat setting so be prepared to work pretty hard

This years two week ‘Nei Gong’ retreat will actually be looking at the Xiantian aspect of Bagua and in particular the eight key Hexagram energies of circle walking practice as well as single and double palm changes. The Nei Gong aspects of the system will be emphasised with the option of martial arts training in the evenings for those who wish to study this side of the art as well.

Damo will be teaching the eight Hexagrammatic postures of Xiantian circle walking Nei Gong taken from both the classical Wu and contemporary Cheng systems. The focus for this training will be on enabling students to understand the functions and practices of circle walking including its energetic and alchemical aspects. As well as being the basis of the martial art of Baguazhang, Xiantian circle walking methods are a powerful form of Nei Gong which can open the channels of the body and circulate Qi to a very high level.

The basis of Bagua is ‘change’. Daoists recognised that constant change is the nature of life; impermanence is the only constant. The art of Bagua aimed to reflect that quality within its practice and so instead of studying ‘form’ like many other internal arts, Bagua studies ‘change’ and the transition between two ‘non-constant’ states. This helps to connect the practitioner to the various cycles and fluctuations of Qi taking place constantly within their body.

The ‘single’ and ‘double’ palm changes being taught are taken from the Xiao Jia ‘small frame’ form which you can read more about elsewhere on this site.

Disclaimer

The Nei Gong process taught by Damo Mitchell and Lotus Nei Gong is a classical process and is, at times, very strong. For this reason we do not recommend that anybody with psychological disorders or those with serious medical issues/needs attend these events. There are many ‘medical’ Qi Gong schools out there that would be more appropriate for these kinds of needs. Nei Gong is also not suitable for pregnant women or anybody under the age of 18 years old. Lastly we reserve the right to ask any student to leave the training immediately if we deem the training to be unsuitable for them or a risk to their well-being.

Xiao Jia Palms

Single Changing Palm – The Heaven Gua. Maintaining internally originated expansiveness whilst moving on a single plain. Essentially adjustment of focal point of power on a two dimensional, horizontal arc.
Double changing palm – The Earth Gua. Taking the quality of the Heaven Gua and distorting the plain of movement so that it can move off of the horizontal axis.
Following Body palm – The Wind Gua. Maintaining the quality of internal expansiveness and then allowing it to spiral within the body through controlled releases of pressure.
Reverse Body palm – The Fire Gua. This change teaches you to draw in and then expand out from the centre point of the body. In this way the ‘release’ is directed like a chain out towards your extremities.
Turning Body Palm – The Thunder Gua. The pressure in the body is built up and then released through the structure causing sudden changes in speed and power within the centre of the body.
Turning Body Palm – The Water Gua. The pressure within the body is raised upwards and dropped down creating changes in force and mass as you move.
Overturning Body Palm– The Lake Gua. Bringing the result of the release process out from the confines of your body into the space generated within the centre of your circle.
Returning Body Palm – The Mountain Gua. A sudden and abrupt ‘stop’ to the waves of force generated within the body.
