Body Alignment Work

So here is the third installment of your videos. This time we have a short video on the Kua and lining up the joints. These videos are still very basic (they will continue to be basic for a short while yet) and aimed at helping you to refine the way you stand and move. Experience has shown us that teaching how to stand can take around 2-3 years for beginners in these arts. Almost all classical teachers agree that ‘standing is the key’ to all of this stuff and yet they don’t often instruct you on HOW to stand. Understanding what is going on and how to correctly practice can take a while so we gradually layer all of the parts into your practice over a period of time.

Go back through your standing posture and basic movements and start to check the principles in the video are correctly being applied to what you are doing. For some of you new to the arts (and this school) it may seem a little tedious to keep hitting these same exercises over and over but trust me, it will make all the difference to how quickly you progress later on down the line. You don’t have a great deal to ‘do’ just yet but this will change and you will be swamped! So take this opportunity to correct and build your foundations while you still can…

The practice session times are still the same for the time being…

Session structure 1 = Body-based

  • 30 minutes = stretching and loosening (shoulder rolls and so on)
  • 15 minutes = core work (planks, leg raises and so on – be sensible)
  • 30 minutes = Practicing the alignments and principles for Wuji standing & first two Ji Ben Qi Gong movements (check list – use a mirror)
  • 15 minutes = Actual lower Dan Tian work, find the LDT and start the ‘turning’ exercise

Session structure 2 = Energetics-based

  • 30 minutes = stretching and loosening (shoulder rolls and so on)
  • 15 minutes = Practicing the alignments and principles for Wuji standing (check list – use a mirror)
  • 15 minutes = practicing moving up and down maintaining principles whilst moving (2 Qi Gong exercises)
  • 30 minutes = Actual lower Dan Tian work, find the LDT and start the ‘turning’ exercise*

Try to follow this structure as best you can and work sensibly.
